Marriage data show a strong degree of positive assortative mating along a variety of attributes. But since marriage is an equilibrium outcome, it is unclear whether positive sorting is the result of preferences rather than opportunities. We assess the relative importance of preferences and opportunities in dating behaviour, using unique data from a large commercial speed dating agency. While the speed dating design gives us a direct observation of individual preferences, the random allocation of participants across events generates an exogenous source of variation in opportunities and allows us to identify the role of opportunities separately from that of preferences. We find that both women and men equally value physical attributes, such as age and weight, and that there is positive sorting along age, height, and education. The role of individual preferences, however, is outplayed by that of opportunities. Along some attributes such as occupation, height and smoking opportunities explain almost all the estimated variation in demand. Along other attributes such as age , the role of preferences is more substantial, but never dominant. Despite this, preferences have a part when we observe a match, i.

Speed daters who romantically desired most of their potential partners were rejected quickly and overwhelmingly, according to a new Northwestern University study. Conventional wisdom has long taught that one of the best ways to get someone to like you is to make it clear that you like them. Now researchers have discovered that this law of reciprocity is in dire need of an asterisk in the domain of romantic attraction.
The more you tend to experience romantic desire for all the potential romantic partners you meet, the study shows, the less likely it is that they will desire you in return. Think too desperate, too indiscriminate. In contrast, when you desire a potential partner above and beyond your other options, only then is your desire likely to be reciprocated. Think hallelujah, finally, someone really gets me. In the past, social psychologists have had a difficult time observing initial romantic attraction in action, but the speed-dating methodology used in this study allowed the investigators to take a serious look at the chemistry that has been at the center of so much literature, art and imagination throughout the ages.

John S. Using logistic regression to determine speed dating compatibility. N2 – Speed dating has become big business as the new alternative on the dating scene compared to meeting in bars, attending social events or using online dating services. In achieving its aim the results have been quite successful with reports that half of all participants come away with at least one promising match.
Because of the limited time to interact, it is important that there should be a reasonable degree of compatibility between the couples for there to be any chance of a match. To determine their suitability beforehand, the participants are given a survey involving a number of questions and only those who are deemed to be even mildly compatible are arranged to meet in the same session. This research shows how binary logistic regression can be used to help any speed dating organisation determine whether a couple are compatible and even provide a probability that they will be a match.

Watch the trailer. The film tells the story of speed dating addict James Van Der Bexton as he approaches his 30th birthday. Saw it Friday night and really enjoyed it. Great reaction from the audience particularly to Don Wycherley as the inept Detective. To take it so seriously is to miss the point, its a comedy and very funny one at that.
O’Connor is excellent as the rejected Van Der Bexton and some of the speed dating scenes are hilarious. Speed dating is a romantic comedy and while O’Connor lunges from one crazy situation to the next, the events are simply a backdrop to the essence of the film which is Van Der Bexton’s quest for love. Also I just checked out the website and it won the best feature film at the Malibu Film festival and the audience award at the European Independent Film Festival in Paris, so that’s pretty cool!!!
